Having paid three visits to the NYMR during a week long family holiday to North Yorkshire, I came away with the distinct impression the the railway's motive power situation is balanced on a knife edge. Only three serviceable steam locomotives and two diesels is just enough to run the gold timetable services, and when things go wrong, as they did on the last two days, late running and cancellations ensue. A great pity as the NYMR is one of the best heritage railways.
