The prospect of some improved weather throughout the day led me back to the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway for the first day of their 30th Anniversary gala. As well as the two ex-LNWR guest engines that had appeared in the Compo Club photocharter on the previous day, the gala also featured the two Austerity 0-6-0 saddle tanks that are resident on the line.
From the railway's point of view, the day has to be counted as one of its greatest successes, perhaps helped in no small measure by appearing on the BBC Wales news programme on Friday evening.
