It was on 3rd September 1966 that the Great Central closed as a through route after a working life of less than 70 years, an event that was commemorated by today's Great Central Railway with a two day mini gala that featured five steam locomotives, a diesel and a DMU. The first day was marred by some evil weather, but things had much improved for the second day.
